Sailing Coaches for 2023
The St. Margaret Sailing Club, often regarded as one of the greatest sailing places in Canada, is looking for coaches for our 2023 Learn to Sail Program.
Our ever-expanding program offers the entire span of Sail Canada’s curriculum, Wetfeet through CANSail 6, and we are looking for coaches to support the growth of our sailors at every level - from the introduction to sailing to our Race Teams.

Commensurate with experience and qualifications. Coaches will also be given club branded clothing & gear, Club Membership and access to the club fleet at head coach discretion.

Responsibilities
Prepare lessons and deliver the Sail Canada curriculum to help sailors reach goals applicable to their level.
Exhibit strong organizational and planning skills.
Instruct students and deliver sailing school programs in a professional manner.
Provide a safe, fun, and educational environment for sailors.
Play a leading role in ensuring club equipment and facilities remain clean, tidy, and in good repair throughout the season.
Maintain records of student achievements, attendance, and related program activities. Communicate these records effectively to students, parents/guardians and the Head Instructor.
Attend Thursday night races and regattas with the Green Fleet or Race team as applicable.
Qualifications
Currently registered Sail Canada Instructor – or planning to obtain certification in the Spring of 2023
Current Sail Canada Instructor prerequisites (First Aid, CPR, PCOC, Coach Boat Safety Course, Police Background Check, SAIL Canada Safe Sport Module) or pending completion in the Spring of 2023
VHF / ROC Certificate
Knowledge and experience in basic boat repairs
Previous coaching experience is an asset
Race team experience for competitive classes is an asset
Expectations
Work productively together as a coaching team
Fully committed to upholding a high standard of coaching.
Regularly update and maintain sailor records and perform CAN Sail evaluations
Committed to helping sailors set and reach goals
Maintain and repair equipment as needed
Assist with basic housekeeping of the Junior Sail facilities
Available through the core season which runs from the last week of June to the end of August.
Available for selective additional work including dinghy race nights, private lessons as well as spring and fall seasonal preparations.

Head Coach for 2023

The program offerings include the entire span of Sail Canada’s curriculum and we are looking to expand our Program this year and to include shoulder seasons and have a dedicated Opti and 420 Race Team.
We invite interested coaches to apply by January 13, 2023.

Qualifications
A mature individual with a positive “can do” attitude, with the ability to act as a positive role model and ambassador for the St. Margaret Sailing Club.
A demonstrated passion for sailing, including race experience
Someone willing to learn and take on the challenge of running a Learn to Sail Program - guidance and professional development will be offered to the successful candidate
A minimum of CANSail 3-4 Certification, CANSail 5-6 Certification preferred but all interested coaches are encouraged to apply.
A working knowledge of current Sail NS and CANSail LTS program structure and operations
Knowledge of 420's, Optimists, Lasers, coach boats and their maintenance
Ability to operate a coach boat in an appropriate and safe manner
VHF / RCOC certification
Fully insured with Sail Canada
Valid PCOC Card - boat operators card
First Aid: Any national program approved by the CANSail Insurance Policy
Supervisory experience and further certification would be considered assets
Successful Police Background Check & Vulnerable Sector Screening
Key Accountabilities
Deliver a quality sport experience for all participants while ensuring the safety of all users of the club including students, coaches, and members.
Liaise between all key stakeholders – sailing school participants, parents, and board members.
Supervise and mentor staff members/coaches.
Promote the St. Margaret Sailing Club at events, in the community, and at Sail NS.
Ensure that all equipment (sailboats, coach boats, radios, etc.) are kept in good and safe working order.
Specific Responsibilities
Coordinating and assisting in pre-season and post-season maintenance of all sailing equipment and inventory log
Ensuring the development and implementation of CANSail programming for all levels of the Youth Sailing Program
Managing a staff of 8 to 9 instructors, including but not limited to participating in the hiring process, reporting of hours for payroll, performance management and job evaluation.
Preseason orientation and training of coaches, including onshore and on water sessions
Communicating effectively with sailing staff to ensure implementation of program goals and curriculum
Assisting with the placement of students in the appropriate program/level
Bringing employee issues or problems to the Learn to Sail Director before potential problems escalate
Communicating effectively, and on a regular basis with youth sailing program participants and their parents, the Sailing Club Manager, LTS Director and other key stakeholders
Scheduling additional working hours (Adult lessons, Private Lessons, Regatta staff) for Sailing Instructor Staff
Supervising sailing instructor staff in the teaching of sailing lessons
Recording and maintaining records of student progression
Leading additional event planning over and above the regular program for the purpose of enhancing participant experience and exposing the club to learning opportunities
Implementing and monitoring all safety plans and policies for the learn to sail program, ensuring strict adherence to the established Emergency Action Plan and providing first aid when necessary
Coordinating all sailboat and coach boat maintenance and repairs with instructors, the Fleet Director, suppliers and marinas
Supervising all areas used by sailing staff and program sailors
Assisting Race Coach(es) with the logistics related to local regattas for SMSC participants, including communication with parents and participants
Attendance at all SMSC sponsored events (e.g. Open House, Island Day, Closing BBQ, etc.) as required.
