Spinnaker 2 Checklist

All areas are assessed based on further development required by the student or they are performing the task consistently.

Balance

  • Adjust boat balance to allow for sailing by the lee with spinnaker*
  • Adjust boat balance for planing and surfing on reach and run with spinnaker
  • Adjust boat balance for top speed on reaches and runs with spinnaker

Sail Trim

  • Ensure sail and boat trim is optimal for speed given conditions by lining up with a tuning partner
  • Adjust sail trim to allow for sailing by the lee with spinnaker*
  • Adjust sail trim to promote planing and surfing when reaching and running with spinnaker
  • Demonstrate proper pole position and sheet tension for speed on points of sail involving spinnaker

Direction

  • Adjust direction to strive for top speed while on a reach or run
  • Adjust direction to promote planing and surfing with a spinnaker
  • Demonstrate proper point and speed mode decision making downwind
  • Use masthead wind indicator to assist in spinnaker related decisions*

Head Up

  • Demonstrate tactical and efficient leeward mark approaches and roundings with spinnaker during races
  • Douse, head up and correctly implement ‚Äútack or not‚Äù decision making around leeward marks when racing

Bear Off

  • Properly select and implement bear away and gybe sets at windward mark when racing
  • Demonstrate proper planning, setup and implementation of leeward spinnaker reach sets*
  • Perform windward and leeward hoist for efficiency during racing*
  • Demonstrate efficient double tacks around windward marks followed by hoists when racing

Gybe

  • Perform spinnaker gybes in correct order at 45 second intervals
  • Perform a double gybe to lay a leeward mark*
  • Select a wave to gybe on while surfing with spinnaker

Down-speed

  • Slow down to avoid a leeward mark pinwheel

Seamanship

  • Evaluate rig settings and adjust between races when necessary for maximum speed
  • Adjust fine controls during racing for speed downwind with spinnaker
  • Explain weather, lee and neutral helm when sailing with a spinnaker

Tactics & Strategy

  • Tactical decisions appropriately implemented downwind/at roundings
  • Demonstrate efficiently taking 360 and 720 penalties while racing with a spinnaker*
  • Defend position on a reach, a run and a leeward mark with spinnaker

Mental Training

  • Participate in regional or provincial regatta using spinnaker
  • Set skill/process based goals for training and racing sessions involving spinnaker
