Hiring Junior Sail Coaches for 2020

SMSC is hiring for the 2020 sailing season. SMSC has a long history of a sailing club as well as offering a junior sail program from beginners to advanced levels of sailing as well as some private lessons. SMSC is located within Glen Haven at the head of St Margaret’s Bay.

The Junior Sail Program is looking for instructors to work with all levels of our junior sail program this summer – wet feet, cansail 1, cansail 2, cansail 3&4 and cansail 5&6.

SMSC invites qualified instructors to apply for our 2020 season:


Sailing Instructor, SMSC Jr Sail Program

Reports To:

SMSC Jr Sail Head Instructor


Approximately early/mid June, 2020 - August 31, 2019 – could vary slightly


08:15 - 16:45; Monday – Friday; some weekdays or weekends if participating in regattas or conducting private lessons.


Commensurate with experience and certification


  • Teaching students to the Sail Canada standard for the applicable class level

  • Prepare and deliver classroom lessons about sailing/boating and water safety

  • Regular communication with parents, participants and instructors

  • Complete evaluations for students in their respective checklick profile and communicate to

    the students on a regular basis their level requirements

  • Manage, maintain and teach proper care and storage of all equipment and boats

  • If there are behavioral or any injuries then incident reports are to be prepared, reviewed and

    issued to parents

  • Ensuring the grounds, facilities and equipment are maintained on a daily basis; any issues

    need to be reported to the Head Instructor

  • Safety of students and equipment at all times; concussion awareness and protocol is required



  • CYA Certified Instructor

  • Current first aid/CPR certification and copy to be provided

  • Excellent interpersonal, organization, communication, and team skills

  • Teaching experience as a sailing instructor an asset

  • Valid boater’s license and copy to be provided and coach boat safety

  • Knowledge of 420's, Opti's and their maintenance

  • Race experience an asset

All offers will be contingent upon a successful Police Background Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening), boater’s license and CPR certificate as well as proof of insurance. Reimbursement of the background check and proof of insurance is to be submitted via expense report no later than June 1, 2020 for reimbursement.

The successful applicant will be a dedicated and enthusiastic individual with a love for sailing. They will excel at teaching young sailors to further hone their knowledge and skills within the Sail Canada learn to sail structure.
